Nature & Outdoors

Mountains, Lakes, Rivers
& Forest

Broken Bow sits where the Ouachita Mountains meet the Coastal Plain. Broken Bow Lake covers 14,000 acres with 180 miles of shoreline. The Mountain Fork River runs crystal-clear year-round, fed from the bottom of the dam where temperatures hold in the 50s even in August. Beavers Bend State Park wraps it all in 3,400+ acres of pine and hardwood forest. This is why you came.

On Foot

Hiking Trails at Beavers Bend

Beavers Bend State Park has trails for every level — from 20-minute nature walks to full-day backcountry scrambles. Download the offline AllTrails map before you arrive; cell service is unreliable on most trails and markings can be sparse on the longer routes.

🥾
Friends Trail Loop
The first new trail added to Beavers Bend in 15 years. 1.5-mile loop with some steep climbs, gorgeous views of the Mountain Fork River, and a ridgeline panorama of the lake. The parking lot off 259A makes it easy. Best in the early morning before it gets busy.

On the Water

Lake, River & Everything In Between

The water is the main event in Broken Bow. The lake is enormous, the river is year-round cold and clear, and the fishing is some of the best in the Southern U.S. Here's how to get on it.

🛶
Kayaking the Mountain Fork
The Lower Mountain Fork River is crystal-clear, cold, and has Class 2+ rapids plus a 3-foot waterfall that's way more thrilling than it sounds. Tippa Canoe shuttles you upriver for a 4-hour paddle back. There's a photographer at the waterfall who captures every kayak — genius move, and worth buying.

Broken Bow Lake
14,000 acres of the clearest water in Oklahoma — pontoons, jet skis, wakeboarding, or just floating in a cove with a cooler. Beavers Bend Marina is the only marina on the lake. They rent everything from 2-person jet skis to 14-person double-decker party boats. Book ahead in summer.

Fly Fishing — Year-Round Trout
The Mountain Fork is a federally protected waterway stocked with rainbow and brown trout every other week, all year long. The cold dam-fed water makes it one of the best trout fisheries in the Southern U.S. Book a guide through Broken Bow Trout Pro — Steve Branson and his brother Trent are the real deal. Everyone limits out.

Cedar Creek Golf Course

ATV Riding — Bandits Rentals
Bandits ATV rents UTVs and side-by-sides with direct access to miles of old lumber trails in the Ouachita National Forest. Half-day or full-day rentals. Download the Avenza offline trail map before you go — cell service is sketchy out there. The most popular adrenaline activity in the area.

Trail prep: Cell service is unreliable on most trails and in the forest. Download offline maps (AllTrails and Avenza) before you arrive. Bring plenty of water, bug spray (spring through fall), and real hiking shoes for anything beyond the Nature Center trails.
